Thunder in the Sand – Wildwood Beach Race
June 12, 2010
The sounds of the ocean waves lapping against the sandy shore weren’t the only sounds you’d hear on the weekend of June 5-6. On that weekend the motorsport friendly town of Wildwood New Jersey played host to the Thunder in the Sand. The event held twice a year, once in the spring and once again in the fall, takes place directly on the beach. That’s correct, any other weekend you’ll find beach towels and umbrellas but this weekend is for motocross. There is a complete schedule of motocross and atv racing but the relaxed pace of one moto per class each day makes the weekend feel like a bit of a moto vacation. The racing action however certainly isn’t a vacation as the generous pro purse brings out intense competition. [Read more]

Where Can I Ride? The NJ Edition.
May 9, 2010
Here is a post I wrote for my own website NJ Motocross explaining the problem with legal riding area in the state I live in. I’m sure this is not an isolated instance exclusive to New Jersey. All states will soon face the crush of shrinking riding areas. If you do not get involved with your local and state organization say good bye to riding as you know it.
Working in powersports dealers in New Jersey for all of my adult life I often hear from customers that there is no place to ride in New Jersey. And except for the couple of race tracks (Atco and Englishtown) they are correct. Sure there are tons of sand pits and back yard places that you can ride, some legal some not, but for the most part New Jersey is void of an established riding park.
Over the past couple of years a movement has been growing steam to help change that. But more often than not anytime there is a proposed location the local and not so local environmental lobbyist get involved and squash the proposal eliminating your riding park. Sure the local towns will go out and build a baseball or football field and even make your once favorite riding area a nature preserve and your tax dollars go to pay for it.
One of the key factors in getting this changed requires action. You can no longer sit on the couch and say “someone should build a riding park”. It is now time for action, otherwise the sport of off road riding will be gone for good. That’s right, many towns have looked at and passed ordinances across the country eliminating off road vehicle access. That means no more riding your ATV or dirt bike.
But what about on my property you may say? Well there too they can pass an ordinance banning the use on your own property. Think that can’t happen….well it already has.
Now is the time to get involved. This is where NJOHVA or the New Jersey Off Highway Vehicle Association gets involved. Coupled with your local powersports dealers NJOHVA is out there fighting the fight to get bills passed and land organized to create riding parks in the state.
You can get involved first by joining NJOHVA through the link provided below:
Then by participating in the “Action Alerts” sent out via email. These alerts often are simply requests to pass along an email or letter to your state representatives requesting their action on your behalf with regards to your OHV rights. Sometimes they are alerts notifying you about a town council meeting about a proposed riding area or other OHV issue. Spend the time to get involved.
Lastly learn about the proposals and issues facing you as an OHV enthusiast. Only by each individual getting involved can we as a group make OHV use available in the state.
For more about NJOHVA visit their website at the link below
And if your local dealer and riding buddies aren’t aware of this group please let them know about it.
We need all the support we can get if we hope to continue our ATV and Dirt Bike use in the state.
Thank you for your support.
An Introduction from Scott Lukaitis
April 28, 2010
Hello all-
Since it has been quite a while since I posted here I thought I would give you a brief run down on who I am.
My name is Scott Lukaitis and I am a lifelong member of the powersports business. Working in this industry is the only job I’ve ever known. Starting in 1984 as a student in high school I began working at the local Honda and Kawasaki dealer as a counter guy and over the years I’ve worked for a couple of other stores as a parts counter employee, a parts manager, an accessory manager and most recently as the e-commerce manager for Ocean County Powersports. Sun, sand, surf and quad racing?
June 14, 2009
Sun, sand, surf and quad racing?? That’s right. For the past several years the seaside resort of Wildwood, New Jersey has hosted the Thunder in the Sand Beach race. Promoted by Thunder Motorsports the event is held late in the spring and early in the fall before and after the throngs of sun bathers converge on the Jersey Shore for summer time fun. The temporary track is built right on the beach and features all of the obstacles normally found on any race track around the country. The spring event was held over the final weekend in May and had nearly 400 quad riders including a full 20 man Quad A gate. In that A class Yamaha mounted Pat Brown was the class of the field defeating Donald Lysinger and Richard Lindsay for the top step on the podium. Your chance at racing on the beach comes again this fall on October 9-11. www.thundermoto.com for more information
